Colin is just another geek who enjoys working with a variety of technology. And vehemently believes that “specialisation is for insects.”
A geek should be able to compile a BSD kernel, design a database, install and remove equipment from a 48RU rack, conn a NOC, design a datacenter, write a shell script, load balance traffic, build an iptables firewall, set a nice value, reap zombies, take orders, give orders, remember command line arguments, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, terminate Cat5, recover corrupted file systems, program software in x86 assembly perl C and PHP, negate a denial of service attack, remove search results from the Internet. IT specialization is for insects.
A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects. — Lazarus Long (Time Enough for Love, Robert Heinlein)
